Series: His Fair Assassin 1
First Published: April 3, 2012
Blurb: Why by the sheep when you can be the wolf?
Escaping from the brutality of an arranged marriage, seventeen-year-old Ismae finds sanctuary at the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts -- and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must be willing to take the lives of others.
Ismae's most important assignment takes her straight to the high court of Brittany, where she must pose as mistress to the darkly mysterious Gavriel Duval, who has fallen under a cloud of suspicion. Once there, she finds herself woefully underprepared -- not only for the deadly games of love and intrigue, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death's vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?
In Her Shoes is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Vanya at YA Story Teller. To participate, simply put yourself in the shoes of a heroine you've recently read about, and then tell what you would do in her stead, or what you've learned from her.
I love books with a strong heroine, so this one was absolutely perfect. An assassin! I'd make my main female an assassin as well, for crying out loud! However, Ismae does not trust in her own abilities enough, is too easily shaken by events and needs guidance throughout most of the book. That's so annoying! On the one hand, she is shown to be stubborn and totally her own woman, but then she cowers before the convent, despite knowing that it's only the god of Death she has to serve. Takes way too long for her to grab a handle on that one strong enough to pull herself from under the convents covers and spread her wings. If she hadn't hesitated like this, she would've saved some people (especially Duval) a lot of stress and pain. *sigh* Despite her being an assassin, a wolf, she seemed to be quite a little lost lamb still. Alright, not entirely her own fault, but still... Why can't there be a woman that is strong through and though? Privilage to the male characters, as far as I can see. *grrr* I guess I made clear that if I had been in her shoes, I would've not trusted in orders from someone who isn't here to see the facts as I see them, and trust more into the god that guides me and my own abilities.

Goodreads Blurb: Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe.
