- Robert Newcomb: Savage Messiah
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane.
Lead roles: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow
Summary: Bosten 1954: U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels is to investigate the disapperance of a patient of Ashecliffe Hospital for insane criminals, located on an island just outside Boston Harbor. He volunteered for this case due to personal reasons, but soon the question if he is being manipulated by the psychiatrists undermines the scenario. Teddy finds a promising lead to reveal the doctors' unethical methods, but the hospital staff does not show very cooperative to solve the case at hand. As a hurricane embraces the island and cuts off communication with the main land, things get even messier and crazier. As statements conflict more and more, Teddy starts not only to question what goes on behind the scenes of Shutter Island, but the accuracy and wellbeing of his own mind as well.
I do not really like horror stuff, but this was psyche on an awesome level, even better than Inception. You always wonder and are just as confused as Teddy about the things that are going on while he strolls over the island in order to find the truth. Especially the end, where you lose yourself in the explanation that Teddy gets to believe and you no longer know if you are to believe what you saw, or take all the small hints and place them together as the truth that is served at the end. I love that kind of ending. 😉 Yet, I think the book might prove to be more interesting still.
