Rogue Chronicles Entry
I'm in love, peeps. My day I've always been hesitant about the steampunk genre, just like I am with Sci-Fi books, but this read was amazeballs, and I want MORE of it and of the genre in general. This is everything I would expect a good steampunk book to be -- and always feared nothing would live up to my expectations. I blame YA heroines for that, b/c most are just so... nice. You can't make a fluffy-nice girl the heroine of a world that hinges 50% on engines. Not that there was any oil and grease in this read, but generally speaking. It just doesn't sit right in my head.
Even if there had been filthy working conditions, Glory would've been totally fine with getting her hands dirty. She's the kind of heroine that looks good under a layer of grime that reflects her determination to get a job done, to fix something broken, not to give up -- ever. She's a fighter, sometimes more, sometimes less, but she definitvely has the spirit deeply ingrained in her, and has a big heart. With that bloodline, I'm not at all surprised. Loved her as a heroine, and am curious how much strength she can draw from finally knowing about her heritage. As far as twists go, I loved this one, but it keeps me wondering when I will ever find an author who has the balls to pair a uber-supernatural being with your run-of-the-mill human, strong in character but otherwise ordinary to the last cell.
Irving was, just like Glory, one hot piece of snarkiness. He had a lot of different layers and angles, showing a new side of himself as the situation (with Glory) changed, and I loved that about him. First and foremost, he's a good person, with a huge heart and an iron will, making him also a strong leader (not just proven by his take-charge, no-holds-barred attitude in the bedroom). I look forward to see him fully own up to his heritage, his power, as well.
The two of them together were a hot mess, just the right amount of foul-mouthed without crossing over to crude. I laughed a lot, but the sexy could've done with a little more emotion. It also revealed some inconsitencies in Glory's character, but I'm confident that can be fixed with some more character development in the next installments. And while there was a lot more world building than actual action in this first one, it layed out a foundation for an amazing story with lots of steampunk and Djinn wish-magic action I look very, very much forward to reading. I have high expectations for this series!
