Booking Through Thursday is a weekly bookish meme about (mostly) books and reading.
Interesting question. No, I think they shouldn't. Categorizing into audiences as YA, Mature Teen, and Adult is enough in my opinion. Although I think it'd be good to know what exactly fits which category. Not just knowing, but having it pinpointed, wirtten down somehwere that YA is, like, 11-14, Mature Teen is 14-18 and Adult is 18+. Simple, but affective. I think that would help the kids to pick something suited for them, as well as the adults who try to gift books to teens.
Okay, that's what I think. Let's see your opinion on the matter. Link me up!
I think the rating seem to work pretty good. I don't read many adult books, so I like to know what I am getting myself into when I start a book. I also like to know if a book is a little too old for my teenager, sometimes even though it says that it is YA, it contains some things that I wouldn't really want my 12 year old to read. Great post. 😀

I'm against a rating system. I cover why a bit more on my blog but mostly I think it is to subjective. What is inappropriate for one person might barely be questionable for another.

Agreed. Thanks for visiting.

I'm probably less inclined for an age-based rating (though it could help somewhat), but I do feel that more specific content indicators could be useful (kind of like they do for TV shows when they come on) -- you can see my full response here and the discussion continued in my comments.

Great answer. I more or less agree with you there.

I agree. I also feel that it would be a form of censorship in that a teen that is able to read more mature material probably wouldn't be able to purchase "adult" books. Reviews often give an idea as to content that isn't used in the description of the book. And what you would consider "adult" literature would be different from what another person may think of that. You may also get a lot of classics classified as being 18+ and therefore restricted because it talks about a particular topic and therefore would be off limits to readers under that age.
