Series: Charley Davidson 1
Debut: February 1, 2011
Snuck from: Cassie @ The Anfractious Bookaholic
Read: July 25-28, 2013
Private investigator Charlotte Davidson was born with three things: looks; a healthy respect for the male anatomy; and the rather odd job title of grim reaper. Since the age of five, she has been helping the departed solve the mysteries of their deaths so they can cross over. Thus, when three lawyers from the same law firm are murdered, they come to her to find their killer.
In the meantime, Charley's dealing with a being more powerful - and definitely sexier - than any spectre she's ever come across before. With the help of a pain-in-the-ass skip tracer, a dead pubescent gangbanger named Angel, and a lifetime supply of sarcasm, Charley sets out to solve the highest profile case of the year and discovers that dodging bullets isn't nearly as dangerous as falling in love.
Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 80
Plot: I love, love, love the mix of real life to paranormal. At the one side, you have the regular police and detective work which involves shitty, angry, stubborn, jealous, etc people beating you up and/or trying to shoot you. Every once in a while, I enjoy that, and the voice Jones uses for her story is perfect for me in that regard. On the other side, you have Charley talking to the dead to help solve their murders/cases, and all the issues that come with her having abilities which normal people, especially strictly logical cops, just cannot fanthom, and most don't even try. The mix is absolutely perfect!
In this first story, Charley has to solve the murders of three lawyers who worked together in the same firm. While she puts the pieces together, she's hunted by a shadowy prescence that gets her knees week, and she finds out it's a guy she knows from years back -- Reyes. He's comatose, which explains her kinda being able to see him, and about to be cut off life support. Desperately trying to find and save the one guy who ever made your heart beat -- and who could love you for you and what you are. Take that for drama!
Characters: Charley is truly one of a kind. She's snarky, badass, takes things as they come, a good friend and listener, but doesn't take shit from people who stand in her way. I have no idea how being the Grim Reaper from such a young age made her into this. It was probably her father's good influence, then her uncle's. She really knows how to chose her battles, with a strong sense of justice and a natural need to help. And through all that, she keeps her humor. I think it's because she has a small circle she can trust, and that's enough if you have a life like hers.
And Reyes, OMG! He was definitvely sin on two legs, and worse. It was pretty creepy at first, but so worth it. Although the package deal of secrets and complications he's having in tow isn't to be taken lightly -- not by a long shot. I'm really, really curious what's to happen with the two of them next.
Then, there's the ghosts... I think there'll be other like them in the sequels, yet I want to say their lives, deaths, and characters were a good background, solid and real for this paranormalcy to unfold. I truly hope there will be others like them in each story.
