Going Down in Flames | Going Down in Flames 1
by Chris Cannon
If her love life is going down in flames, she might as well spark a revolution.
Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on.
Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.
Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.
At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can't have.

The fire Reds are the hot-tempered muscle while the Blues are the graceful, fast flying, rather stuck up ruling class. Green dragons breathe wind, they are healers and scientists. Orange dragons breathe sonic waves, and there are not many of them left, but there is a rumor that a large community lives under the radar. Black dragons control lightning, and they are rebellious and tattooed.

Bryn is thrust into a school and community of dragons, because she is one herself. Her father is a hot-tempered, fire-breathing Red and her mother is all warmth despite her ice-cold Blue nature. The two were never meant to be, as dragons only get arranged marriages to keep the bloodlines pure, so they forsake it all to be together. Bryn is a crossbreed, being able to control both her parents' elements, and thus is feared, and mobbed, especially by the royal Blues. However, she finds friends among the Blacks in the couple Ivy and Clint, and one of the leaders of the peaceful Revisionists who want to change the laws in the dragon community to allow more individual freedom, Zavien. Since Bryn's mother was supposed to marry fellow Blue Ferrin Westgate, now head of the Directorate, she often bumps heads with his son Jaxon.
However, when there is an actual attempt on her life, Bryn finds an unusal ally in Jaxon, as well as his uncle Merrick. Merrick previously asked her to become his mistress once she graduated, as Bryn was not allowed to marry due to her mixed genes, but Bryn furiously declined the offer, so now the two are friends. Another ally is one of her teachers, Mr Stanton, since Bryn initially stayed at the Green dorms, the librarian Miss Enid, and Medic Williams saved her life after both attacks. After a fight with Zavien, Bryn finds another ally and friend in the waiter Valmont. As Valmont is a descent of the knights in town who are still honor-bound to fight amongst the dragons shall the need ever arise, and he stepped up for her against Zavien, he is now bound to Bryn as her knight. In his jealousy, Zavien finally admits his feelings for Bryn, and the two are a couple now, although Zavien already has another mate assigned to him, Nola.
The second attempt on Bryn's life was on the estate of her Blue grandparents. Turns out a radical Revisionist named Alec was behind the attempts, trying to get back at Bryn's Blue bloodline, almost killing Jaxon and his mother Lilith, but Bryn, Merrick, Medic Williams and Zavien can safe the day. At least her grandfather admits his pride to have her as a granddaughter now, and she is officially admitted into dragon community, marrying privileges and all. However, her grandmother Marie and Lilith get the crazy idea of trying to match her with Jaxon, although he already has an inteded, Rhianna who's much like Lilith (which is a good thing).
