As Clary and Luke try to find Jace, the trace leads them to Renwick's Ruin, and Clary and Luke plan their invasion with the help of Luke's pack. Invasion being the right word, because and army of Forsaken is guarding the place. It costs the life of Luke's first officer Gretel as well as many other wolves to get Luke and Clary safely inside. Searching the building, Clary and Luke find Jocelyn. She's in a deep coma, yet chained to the bed she's laying in. When Blackwell and Pangborn show up, Luke engages them in a fight while Clary moves up to the next story in search for Jace. She finds him in a larg dining room, to her suprise he's unharmed, all clean and in fresh clothes. As Valentine steps in, Jace explains to her with all seriousness that this man in front of her is his father.
While Jace has totally submitted himself to Valentine, Clary is not as easily influenced by their blood bond. Yet, instead of enraging her father, it is Jace that looses his composure because Clary tries to remind him that he belongs to the Lightwoods, and that Valentine is pure evil. Yet, with his eyes that miss nothing, Valentine notices the feelings they have for each other, and uses them to tear them apart, revealing to Jace that Clary is his sister, and that his mother Jocelyn had left him with Valentine while the boy was still an infant. Jace tries to brush it off, but it's obvious that he is shocked and confused.
Then Luke rushes in and challanges Valentine to a fight, Jace hinders Clary from getting away. Yet, this gives the girl time to reason with him, tell him that Jocelyn always though him dead and mourned for him every year. When Jace's facade crumbles, Luke is distracted for a moment and Valentine can strike him down who is now unable to fight any further. As Clary shields Luke from the finishing blow with her own body, it is Jace that prevents Valentine's sword to strike them -- and then tells him to leave for good. Jace chose to stay with Clary, drawing anger from the betrayal he had suffered, and Valentine has no other choice but to retreat through a portal inside a mirror. First he tempts Jace with the sight of Idris, wanting the boy to follow him, but Jace chose his side. Then Valentine tries to tempt him into killing him, but as Jace hesitates, Valentine shatters the portal from the oher side.
In the end, Jace took a fragment of the portal that still shows Idris, missing the home of his childhood. Jocelyn is brough into a hospital, but she is not waking up, not even the Silent Brothers can help her. Alec is saved by Magnus, and Clary and Alec overcome their differences.
