City of Ashes | The Mortal Instruments 2
by Cassandra Clare

Blurb: Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

HEE Summary:

Downworlder children are killed and bled dry by Valentine, one of each race, in order to turn the Soul-Sword into a demon weapon. He revealed his plan to Jace, hoping the boy would join his cause, but he refused. However, now he is mistrusted by both sides, and the Inquisitor had him locked up to later trade him for the sword - a deal Jace, and basically everyone besides the Inquisitor, knows is never going to happen. As Jace escapes his prison with a little input from Alec, he joins Luke and Clary in order to safe werwolf Maia and vampyre Simon who Valentine has picked out especially because they're Jace's and Clary's friends.

The plan includes getting Magnus to transport them to Valentine's boat and disable the shields around it, and Clary giving Jace the rune of Fearlessness so he can fight the Demon of Fear, Agramon, that had killed the first two Downworlder children and the Silent Brothers. However, Magnus and Clary are to remain on the water while Jace and Luke go on board to fight, but Clary is taken to Valentine by one of the minor demons that attack them.

Clary manages to free Maia from her chains, as they try to flee she is caught by her father and they have time consuming talk that gives the other Shadowhunters the time to engage in the battle abord the ship. Imogen gives her life saving Jace from a demon, saying something to him in his last moments that remains a secret to the readers. Then Jace falls into the heart of the ship, finding and facing Agramon again, eventually killing the demon. Moving on, he finds Simon bled dry and barely alive/undead. He gives his blood to safe him, and together they come to Clary's rescue. Jace manages to pass her her stele he'd picked up, and she literally blows the ship apart with the new rune she creates in the heat of the moment.

Most of the Shadowhunters make it, with a little help from a couple of mermaids. However, the sun is rising while they're still on the river - but to everyone's suprise, Simon doesn't burn to ashes, and goes back to his sunlit earlier life as good as he can - which includes having Clary as a friend, not as his girlfriend. Before Clary can talk about the matter with Jace, he says that he would no longer act on his feelings for her, but be her brother only. However, there's also a good thing happening at the very end: Madeleine, Jocelyn's friend from Idris, shows up and tells Clary there is a way to undo the spell that her mother cast on herself.
