In Her Shoes is a bookish meme invented by Vanya at YA Story Teller. To participate, simply put yourself in the shoes of a heroine you've recently read about, and then tell what you thought of her, what you would do in her stead, or what you've learned from her.

Emma Watson casting as:
Maddie Fynn from When

Maddie has been through a lot in her life due to her gift of seeing death dates. She saw her father's date, but couldn't help him because she didn't know what those numbers meant she was seeing. Since then, she has taken care of her (as of then) alcoholic mother, of the house and the bills -- even made sure there was money to spend by charging people to tell them their death dates. Aside from her best friend Stubby, most people call her a witch, so she stays away and acts even more like a wallflower.

But Maddie has a strong character. Although she is badmouthed and bullied, she never stops trying to help people by telling them their dates. She hopes so much that she will one day manage to change a date by telling someone, because maybe they will be extra cautious or change their mind about something. In addition, her good character shows because she does not try to run from her guilt (of not saving her father, as she believes), but sticks with her mother, although she isn't treated too well by her.

Maddie is also very brave. She challenges FBI Agent Farraday to test her abilities, although her lawyer uncle told her not to, because she knows it's the right thing to do to get Farraday to believe her, just so Stubby is no longer a murder suspect in a jail cell. Her will to go above and beyond to help others, but not herself, was remarkable, and something that can only be admired.
