They were made to forget. But they'll never forgive.
Everything about Anna's life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch, at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There's Nick, solemn and brooding; Cas, light-hearted and playful; Trev, smart and caring; and Sam... who's stolen Anna's heart.
When the Branch decides it's time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape. Anna's father pushes her to go with them, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.
Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they're both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.
Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 60
Cover: Love it. You wouldn't think a grey cover could rock, but this one does. Much. I love Sam on it, and his tree tattoo that's so important to the story. But I also love the little inscription that screams: Fight.
Framework: Sci-Fi is not my thing, but since this isn't going too far into science, I like it very much. It's not something you have to strain yourself to comprehend, and it's actually quite interesting. I liked the concept alot, binding people together on the biological level like that, but especially Anna's role in this.
Plot: It's pretty action-loaded, being on the run and all, but also emotionally charged like hell. Piecing together the clues, learning the Does and Don'ts, it was pretty exciting. Escape, Showdown, Escape. For those who like gun-blazing battles and those of will instead of too much talking, a good government conspiracy and identity mess-ups -- here ya go.
Characters: Anna was caring and protecting, a bit too blue-eyed in the beginning for my tastes, but showed some pretty badassness towards the end. I felt she was a little clammed up, but likable.
Sam was very quiet, a little brooding, broken, cute, smart, and as clearly a hero as they come. Passionate, fighting with his head as much as with his heart. A white knight, no badassness included.
Trevor was a big key figure who was perfectly balanced. You can't love him, but you can't hate him either. I'm curious as to what role he might play in what's still to come.
Cas was the cutie. I loved him to death, he was always funny and had the right things to say, but of course he's also a good fighter and a very loyal friend. He's perfect boyfriend material, a guy every mother would love if you'd bring him home.
Nick was the snarky one who didn't seem to fit in the team, but being beta male if you got what he has just sucks, so I understand. Losing a part of yourself like that... He was the mystery card, and I was glad he turned out to be one of the good ones. I'm very excited to see how he will be doing in the sequel, since he was my favorite.
Overall: I mostly loved this for the idea that became clear in the end, the little drama it entailed, but also for the variety in characters. It gives you soo much to still discover, to look forward to. But I also find it to be one of the more action-loaded YA reads on my shelf, so of course I'm loving it for that as well.
