Before Anna and Sam, there was Dani and Sam.
There's one rule that all Branch operatives must live by: No attachments. When Dani O'Brien entered the Branch, she planned to trade her freedom so that her family could have a better life. But joining up with the mysterious organization is more than she bargained for. Branch head Connor watches over her closely--too closely. The training is brutal, the experiments are secret, and the missions promise to be anything but ordinary. The only thing getting Dani through each day is the hope that she'll run into Sam--a young man, about her age, who wears the world on his shoulders.
Rogue Chronicles Entry
Dani was thrown into the first round of tests before she even met Sam. Which is a very smart move, objectively, but turned out to be just one more cruelty for The Branch. They really have it down to a T how to sham people. It makes you lose a little more of your faith in humanity...
Seriously, I wonder how they find all those ruthless jackasses who run the show, and how it even runs since the right hand's thumb doesn't trust its own pinky finger. That made me wonder why they would alter compassionate people like Dani and Sam, and I came up with a theory: a) because a ruthless killer made more ruthless would be totally uncontrolable, because you never have any leverage against them, and they can find other ways to get to money, or b) maybe the ruthless ones could only make it to a certain level before failing.
That being said, I liked Natalia, and would love to find out more about her. She doesn't seem all bad. Maybe that's why she dispises her brother so much? I also liked Dani's glimpse behind Connor's mask. Now he's not just the top bad guy of The Branch in the Altered books, but I feel a bit more connected to him as a character. Of course he's still an ass, and a psycho, but I appreciate a good villain.
As much as I enjoyed it though, it wasn't what I expected to find. Some quality Dani and Sam time was what I was looking for, to find out how they connected and fell in love. Not just re-told, but their story first hand, or even just a good piece of it. This was really and only the beginning, nothing to love yet, and it didn't make you crave more.
