Bright, spunky Heather Robbins has escaped her small hometown and is anxiously beginning her freshman year of college. Rising above her rocky childhood, she’s found a place where good things are finally starting to happen: her own private apartment, refreshing college classes, and an intense attachment to a mysterious and rugged classmate, Nick Richards.
But when her dreamy college life turns out to be nothing more than a wonderful dream while resting in a coma, questions threaten.
Now, Heather must press forward to unlock the real past, and find the answers buried deep in her mind. What she unlocks instead is a roller coaster ride through flashbacks, embellished memories, and a whirlwind romance.
And when it’s all over and she comes face to face with the truth, will she lose everything she’s fallen in love with?
Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 16
This story was told in retrospect, and wandering backwards is always something I enjoy. 😉 Of course it gets a little confusing sometimes if you suddenly get interrupted in the story, which I think made sense here but is in general not really nice for the reader, but it helped a lot that the present was written in third person, and the retrospect in first person. It felt just like it was Heather telling this story right there and then, which was the case inside the story, so: perfect.
The framework plot was Heather, just freshly awakened from her coma, first telling what she relived in her mind during that time to her doctor, and in the end it stayed a bit in the present, revealing just how long she was out of this live, and if everything she deemed memory was true or only made up by her mind. There were two heavy shocks there, but I'm not gonna tell, just that they made me gasp.
The main plot happens in Heather's mind, having her relive the memories from when she started college. Country bumpkin with a rough past that she is, she tries really hard to fit in, but doesn't want to get too close to anyone. However, her plan doesn't quite work out, because Nick aka The Hat captures and holds her attention despite things not running smoothly for her. Heather was... well, a bit too uncertain and kinda repetative in her thought process, but I think that's partly due to her being stuck in a dream/her memories, so she is excused. Nick remains a big mysterium for most of the time, but he struck me as one of the few really deep male characters you find in YA nowadays. There was a real reason he wasn't going after the cheerleader girls although he could've had them one after another, and I think you get quite a glimpse at his personality although you actually never know what exactly he's thinking. The ending was a real shock, though. I'm really curious how this is going to develop in book two, Reaction.
