Hell on earth.
That's what it's like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel.
It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts - immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans.
At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn't told her everything. He's hiding something - something dangerous.
What if Daniel's version of the past isn't actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 87

Oh boy, please shoot me. If you take a look at how long I read on this little bugger, you can probably already guess how well I liked it, and how much I worked to get through. It was sooo many pages of boredom in between, social situations where Luce was there physically, but not mentally, but they didn't really show us anything despite "oh, she's confused and thinking", and without naming, leave alone tailing one of her thoughts. I got that she's confused, overloaded and struggles with her identity after the first two scenes, thank you. Besides, that's just such a weird thing to happen to a YA heroine. *rolls eyes*

I liked the new characters, especially Miles and Shelby. Shoreline was definitively a step up the ladder from Sword & Cross, and I liked the concept of a nephilim school. I would've liked to find out more about the background of it all through the lessons, but that would've meant that there would've been some answers to all of Luce's and out questions. And, obviously through the first two books, that's just not how Lauren Kate writes her stories.

In the installment, we follow the silver lining of glimpses into Luce's (and Daniel's) past and past lives. Not that we'd learned anything from that, but it was meant to keep readers interested and point us to the next installment. Furthermore, Luce has discarded orders from Daniel, Francesca and Steven by looking for answers no one wanted to give her, and that got her into mayor trouble -- which was probably the more important part of it anyways. However, her trips has strenghtended her friendships with Shelby and Miles, and that was a very good thing to come out of it.

Same as in Fallen, the ending has saved the whole book. After fighting through almost the whole book piece by piece and chewing it down to the last letter for information that either wasn't there or got us nowhere, we got to read a good fight at the end again, even better than the one in Fallen.
AND! Luce had me positively surprised when she just flipped the switch and screwed them all over. Enough is enough, and I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of answers (as well as new questions, of course) to find in Passion -- finally.

  1. Oh my...you really didn't like this book! I have wanted to read this series, but it seems to get really mixed reviews! I guess I'll hold off a bit longer lol. I just read and reviewed The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and I pretty much had the same type of review for that book as you did for this book! I hate coming off of reading a bad book, it makes it harder to get back on the reading wagon! Nicely written review!

    1. Yeah, it's just not for me, it seems. Eh, I was looking forward to the day I'd pick up the Mara Dyer books, because everyone loved them so. Good to know that there's also ppl who find them not that exciting. Thanks for stepping by! =)
