A surprise inheritance reunites a mixed martial arts fighter with the woman he's never forgotten in the first in a smoldering new series from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster…
Cannon Colter is quintessential hero material: chiseled jawline, shredded body—the works. He's also the guy who rescued Yvette Sweeny from kidnappers, only to put an end to her romantic dreams. These days, she's older, smarter, determined to face whatever life throws her way. Even the prospect of sharing a house and business with Cannon.
Cannon knew Yvette wanted him three years ago. But she was young—and some things are worth waiting for. Thrown together by her grandfather's legacy, he realizes how deep Yvette's scars really go, and how much danger lurks in their quiet town. As pent-up desire explodes between them, protecting her becomes the only fight that matters. And he'll break all the rules to do it…
Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 155
Oh, now I know where this branches out from -- I so have to catch up on the Love Undercover series! But I have to catch up with her books in general, so let's not mind that. However, as I already know how she rolls, I have certain expectations regarding characters and plot, and No Limits didn't meet them all.
Cannon was as heroic as expected, had even better manners, but wasn't the naughtiest of the bunch. That's not necessarily a bad thing! I liked him just fine this way. =) However, Yvette was a little too caught up in her trying to proof that she could manage on her own -- even though it was clear she couldn't. That was okay, no woman should have to handle an psychotic ex on their own. But she was the type that can't admit they need help, and those just annoy me to no end. So she wanted to move on from a traumatic past, fine. However, I believe that not admitting you need help, or not asking for it, is an even greater sign of weakness than needing help in the first place. Thus, Yvette peeved me quite some, but I don't expect to like every single pairing Foster comes up with. That's unrealistic. So yeah -- those two are certainly not my favorites, but I'm still going to continue the series.
Contrary to that disappointment, I was very delighted to realize Foster didn't start slow with just one pairing this time, adding characters with every installment, but instead introduced them pretty much all in this first book. Some are even more involved than a mere mentioning of the name -- it makes me really excited to pick up their stories! Furthermore, it makes me hope that she won't be simply jumping into the new pairing with the next installment, but keep the previous characters close to the plot again. I love this feeling of family. =)
Lastly, I thought this was pretty lengthy. It could've done with a little less inner monologue about insecurities here and there, but the action twist was nicely done as always, although it did rain on Cannon's hero parade a bit if you think about it. The smut was pretty good and a bit more than usual, I dare say, and if that's where more pages come from, I surely don't mind. 😉
Overall: If you love Lori Foster's writing and her characters, or just a nice contemporary adult romance with lots of yummy Alphas and their "mates" to fall in love with, hot sex, and a good dose of conspiracy and action, go grab! The Ultimate series is definitively spot on her style, and she's always making me laugh and tingle. *fangirls*
