For seventeen-year-old Lena, living in the trailer park with the rest of town's throwaways isn't exactly paradise. Dealing with a drunken father who can't keep his fists to himself doesn't help matters either. The only good thing in her life, other than track, is the mysterious man who visits her dreams, promising to find her. When a chair burns her arms, Lena chalks it up to stress-induced crazy. Yet as bizarre incidents escalate, even being crazy can't explain it all away... until one day dream guy does find her.

Tarek lost Lena seventeen years ago after she was accused of treason and marked Tainted. He finally discovers her reborn on Earth into a life of suffering as punishment for her crime. However, someone else has already found her... and wants her dead. Willing to sacrifice everything, he fights to keep her safe so she can live the only life she's ever known -- even if that life doesn't include him.

Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 143

This story may not look it from the blurb and cover, but it had lots and lots of the real good stuff! For one, the plot development was very steady. You don't get thrown in all the paranormal right away, and that's a good thing, because what Vroman has made up is not that easy to understand. There were moments I was confused, just like Lena who was learning it all new. Thankfully, after that big first wave of info in the first two conversations that was totally confusing, more was revealed in nice packages to finally make sense of the whole picture. So by the end, I definitively got all the important parts for the read, and I'm eager to get into more detail and find out about even more places in the sequels. Plus, there was other stuff going on in between, so you don't get thrown otherworldly info at you in an overkill manner like with some YA paranormals out there.

Aside from the paranormal idea of the world build, which is definitively not for everyone but I enjoyed it enough, this was also a conpiracy/mystery read, and that part was plotted just as well. Maybe you can guess a little about one half of the ending, but that doesn't take the excitement out of the final action and drama, at least not once it actually gets rolling. And with that ending... totally worth it! I was gunning for something else entirely, so kudos for surprising me, making me scream in frustration, and wanting to grab the sequel right away to make it all right. Line, hook, and sinker for me! =)

Add to that all characters that fit right into the cracks. The villains didn't strike me, they just weren't set in scene too much, but that was totally fine with me! I grew really fond of all the other characters, though.
I liked that Lena's new self wasn't like her old one, although never explained too explicitly, and I generally liked her. She had focus and determination. She was initially a little shy, but as she learned of her old self and that she needed to beat the fear for good, she got even stronger and really embraced her new self. She had way bigger problems than boyfriend or nerd herd drama, so the small amounts of it were just right for the YA feeling.
I loved Wilma's smart and kickass, always a little frustrated way with her harsh mouth. She was begrudingly affectionate, a good soul and free spirit who'd risk it all for happiness of someone she held dear. She was awesome, and I really wouldn't want to be on her bad side. I hope there will be more background info on her in the sequels, though.
Tarek was both cutie and all steel warrior -- what's not to love? His hot-headed temper was a little childish, he could do better, but I dare say Lena brought out the best in him, and I think that's what he loved about her so much. They make a good match, the new Lena maybe even a better one than the old Lena, energies and all.
Zander might have the potential of being a second love interest again in the future, but I don't know. The other sidekicks (Farren, Jacie, Jake, even Belva) add up to a very nice package I'm very much looking forward to meet again and learn more about. I'm thinking some Farren x Belva and Jacie x Jake are in store! Pretty please?!
