Blurb: When friends stop trusting each other, darkness is there to fan the flames...
Things have turned black at the House of Night. Zoey Redbird's soul has shattered. With a broken heart making her want to stay in the Otherworld forever, she's fading fast. As the only living person who can reach her, Stark must find a way to save her. But how? He will have to die to do so, the Vampyre High Council stipulates. And then Zoey will give up for sure. There are only seven days left...
Enter BFF Stevie Rae. She wants to help Z, but she has massive problems, too. The rogue Red Fledglings are acting up again. Her kinda boyfriend, Dallas, is sweet but too nosy. Stevie Rae's hiding a secret that might be the key to helping Zoey, but which also threatens to explode her whole world.
In the middle of the whole mess is Aphrodite: ex-Fledgling, trust-fund baby, total hag from Hell (and proud of it). She's always been blessed (if you could call it that) with prophetic visions, but now it seems Nyx has decided to speak through her, whether she wants it or not. Aphrodite's loyalty can swing a lot of different ways, but right now Zoey's fate hangs in the balance.
Three girls... playing fire... if they don't watch out, everyone will get Burned.
After the omg-no-way cliffhanger at the end of the last book, I was really excited about this one. There were a lot of problems to be solved - some did get solved and some didn't, and that's what mainly made this read so amazing, I guess. You get less humor, way more powerful magic, everything is a lot more serious now compared to the first novel. They have to - not want to - mess with powers so great they were almost forgotten already, I think that has to say something in a very long-lived vampyre society. And additionally to the supernatural problems, there's always the usual close-at-hand things, like boyfriend issues. I enjoyed that Stevie Rae and Rephaim had just as much a part in this as Zoey, Stark and Heath, that our favorite BFF is with her status as High Priestess of the Red Vamps actually equal to Zoey - I like that very much! Plus, I have a good feeling that it'll stay like this. If you use a bit of logic - why team them up for no purpose? -, and watch out for the details - like Aphrodite's visions - you know that the Casts always tie nots for a reason. LOVE it. So it's only logical that she gets a whole shitload of problems, including the Dallas/Rephaim one. Makes me want to root for her, so that's what I'll be doing. ^^ But I sound like I didn't even pay attention to the main character x), but rest assured - I did. I liked how difficult it was to solve this one, what parts both Heath and Stark had to play in order to get Zoey's shattered soul back together. Those characters will just never fail to surprise me, at least I hope so. I am very curious how they intend to solve - or maybe not manage to solve just yet? - the Kolona/Neferet problem. I have hopes that Kolona finally may realize his mistakes and will be allowed back to Nyx's side... but maybe not just yet, I guess.
