Blurb: Why by the sheep when you can be the wolf?
Escaping from the brutality of an arranged marriage, seventeen-year-old Ismae finds sanctuary at the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts -- and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must be willing to take the lives of others.
Ismae's most important assignment takes her straight to the high court of Brittany, where she must pose as mistress to the darkly mysterious Gavriel Duval, who has fallen under a cloud of suspicion. Once there, she finds herself woefully underprepared -- not only for the deadly games of love and intrigue, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death's vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

My Review:

Female Assassins... Just my type of thing! When I read that, I though: I MUST have this, no arguing! Then I hoped, of course, that it would meet my expectations -- and it did! I loved that read, it had everything in it: nice plot, good arc of suspense, amazing characters without them being too much despite it being a historical read, you could go on without having to look people up. Very, very important point for a historical novel from my view. The old English vocab was a bit of a challenge, but I enjoyed it imensly. The main characters were just... lovable, really. I liked Ismae and Duval equally, but as a couple and their interaction... it earned them extra points from me. 😉 Even the slightly paranormal elements were nicely woven into the plot. I almost couldn't put that book down, it's been a while since I've experienced such a strong pull from a work. And when I was done, I thought of actually starting all over again...
