It's only been three days, and already everything is different.
Paragon is behind her, but somehow Alessa's life may actually have gotten worse. In a wrenching twist of fate, she traded the safety and companionship of her sister for that of her true love, losing a vital partner she'd counted on for the ordeal ahead. Her comfortable university life is but a distant memory, as she faces the prospect of surviving a bleak winter on the meager remains of a ravaged world. And if she'd thought she'd tasted fear upon seeing a ghost, she was wrong; now she's discovering new depths of terror while being hunted by a deadly virus and a terrifying pack of superhuman creatures thirsting for blood.
And then there are the visions.
The memory-altering "stitch" unlocked something in Alessa's mind, and now she can't shake the constant flood of alien feelings ransacking her emotions. Haunting memories of an old flame are driving a deep and painful rift into her once-secure relationship. And a series of staggering revelations about the treacherous Engineers - and the bone-chilling deceit shrouding her world's sorry history - will soon leave Alessa reeling...

Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 77

Cover: Isn't it georgeous? I really like the icy white that I associate with sterile Paragon, and then the rebel flecks of green and blue that are Alessa and Isaac. Then the ring, and the hands reaching as a symbol for the doubts in their relationship. LOVE it. Plus, having had a glimpse of the Stuck cover already, I know that all three covers are really matching and complementing each other.

Plot: We have three plot threads. First, coninuing on where we left of in Stitch, by acompanying Alessa and Isaac on the outside, the world that's left after the virus, scouting for a new rebel base. Second, a rebel girl named Phoenix which the Ruling Class explains themselves to. And third, Nikhil who we very briefly met in Stitch as a prisoner waiting to be stitched again.
We learn alot about the background of Paragon, the why and the how of it, thanks to the explanations to Phoenix. Some things were not that unusual for a Dystopian, but there were also some shocking aspects -- in the regard that I don't find them too absurd to actually happen, like right now. Genius and insanity are utterly and truly a very fine line that tends to blurr alot.
Then there's Alessa developing an empathetic ability, enabling her to feel and see emotions and memories of the (near) dead. It also allows her to tune into the creatures they encounter -- first outside of Paragon, then inside the prison cells. Monsters that once were human... That was another twist totally off scale, and I know they'll be a focus in the third installement -- so can't wait for that!

Characters: Alessa and Isaac proofed very strong, very conflicted, yet also very open characters. They struggled through a lot, partly by themselves and partly with the other. It's just how it is sometimes, that you want to be open but can't, the doubts and fears, unsure of what to share and what not. Especially Alessa's doubts about the rebellion, about what she was willing to risk, were very intersting.
Nikhil, Janie and Phoenix were used as nice threads to connect the dots. Although we learn more about Nikhil in this, he still doesn't get quite the active role I hope will come in Stuck. And Joe, oh Joe! I can't spoil anything about him, but I know this will be hauting me until I can read the final installment.

Villain quotes:

"I'm sorry to say that the people of Paragon turned on you. Of course, we were hoping they would ... But unfortunately for you, no one appears to have come to your rescue. ... They let the mob have you."

~The Developer: (15%)

"But that's just human nature for you, right Phoenix? Give a man some slack in his rope, and he's liable to hang you with it. Some things never change..."

~The Draftsman: (44%)

"What we haven't told you yet--"
He paused, searching her eyes before he dropped his bombshell.
"-- is that the outbreak wasn't exactly a mistake."

~The Developer: (78%)

"You were all chosen. Everyone here, rebel or not, was selected by the algorithm."

~The Developer: (82%)

"They think we're weak. They think they have the power here. They also think that Phoenix is on their side..." He grinned wickedly. "But we know better."
