Area Info

1. Never trust anyone.
2. Remember they are always searching.
3. Don’t get involved.
4. Keep your head down.
5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 50

First off, I feel the need to clarify some terms. I am very, very picky concerning anything sciene-fictional, because it ususally involves things from so far out of my space that it only gets me rolling my eyes. However, Project Paper Doll is based on majorly science with a little fiction, more precisely: hybrids of human and alien DNA. It's a new idea, and I love it, and I love it all the more because it stops right there. No space journeys or time loops or anything the like involved, thank you very much.

Okay, now for the book! You get to know Ariane piece by piece, but pretty fast at the beginning, and I personally liked her. Her life wasn't easy, being in hiding and all those rules, but sometimes freedom does have a price. And I know it sounds cliché that this prize is too high when it comes to love, but it's a simple truth that never gets boring to me. And Zane was totally woth it! Tall and georgous, conflicted inside, and such a total cutie in how he treated her. There's no way Ariane could keep away from him, and he from her, for that matter. They were a perfect match, in the cutest way!

Plotwise, you saw it coming as much as you didn't. Starting to read, you know that things had to get out of hand for this to become really interesting, but the way to it was nice, building slowly, and then the how were both nothing you could necessarily forsee. Maybe the betrayal was a little cliché at that point as well, but I didn't mind. The why of it made sense to me, and I could sympathize with the traitor, and THAT does not happen too often!
I was also amazed how the falling action of the book turned out. I don't know how authors come up with those kind of outragiously twisted characters, but I just love me some level of insanity in my villains. Full points there. And it wasn't just the mad professor, as might have been expected, it was the crazy-obsessed police chief as well.

Overall, this book rocked on all levels, from structure to characters to emotional vocab to details. As of now, I'm impatiently waiting for the sequel!
