Aspen Dwyer, recently emancipated from foster care, is searching for a place to hide from a past with secrets too dark to share. Honey Creek, Ohio, presents itself as the best place to start a new life and stay undercover. There she meets Colton Moraine, a man with strong family ties and an even stronger sense of loyalty. His boisterous, loving family welcomes Aspen with warmth she hasn’t felt in years. She’s surprised at how quickly and deeply she falls for Colton. When a dangerous criminal comes to Honey Creek, intent on his revenge against her, Aspen must choose between two options. Should she stay and risk her life and the rejection of the people she’s grown to love? Or should she run again, and leave behind any chance of a happy future?
Rogue Chronicles Entry No. 62
Cover: I just love water covers! I think underwater things have something magical. And this is an enticing shot!
Framework: Headstrong, walled-in girl on the run finds strong, gentle man to break through her defenses and keep her save when her past catches up with her.
Plot: Aspen is on the run and hide from her father who is currently in prison (about to be paroled) for killing her mother. He actually threatened her before being taken away, and she knows that's not an empty one. So Aspen goes to Honey Creek for a summer job at a lake where she meets town fire angel Colden and his nosy journalist sister Elise. Elise and Aspen's boss Linda both become friends to Aspen, and she and Colden fall in love with eath other. Before she can run away again, her father actually gets out, and comes to get from her what he didn't get from her mother: a valuable coin that's been in the family for generations.
Characters: Aspen was furiously cute, headstrong yet insecure. An intersting mix that happens to real survivors. She was good, even though she tried to run from what would she would always know would catch her.
Colden was the cutest thing. Really. He had a great sense of humor, a fireman, helping whereever he could, a good heart and soul. A guy to die for, really.
Elise, Linda, Margot and Grandma Millie were aresome sidekicks. The granny gets points for family and for being funny, Margot and Linda for their motherly supportiveness, and Elise for her open-minded curiousity and good heart.
Rick, as the villain, was awesomely gross. I would've run from him, too. And yes, I agree with Aspen that he doesn't deserve a second chance.
Overall: Cute characters with a fairly interesting story and some suspense as well as action, but a halfway forced romance.
