After her parents were murdered, Layna Blair spent three years on the run—until Marine Sergeant Blaze Johnson stepped in and saved her. With him, Layna knew safety for the first time…but two weeks after shipping out for another tour in Afghanistan, Blaze comes home early.

When Layna sees the jagged wounds covering his body, every truth she thought she knew is destroyed. Blaze is distant and angry and though her heart is shattered, Layna desperately tries to keep their relationship together in the face of another tragedy. When the tenuous bonds holding them together are ripped apart by a revenge-hungry maniac, Layna must trust her survival instinct and bury her past for good.

But the enemy is two steps ahead, and before she can take action, Layna's hand is forced by his deadly demands—save herself or save the man who risked his life for her freedom. Blaze saved her once. This time it's her turn to protect him.

Rogue Chronicles Entry

Why I picked this story up:

So I wasn't overwhelmed the first time around, but I thought this would be different with Blaze wounded and maybe this time Layna being the strong one. Plus, I just can't say no to all those gorgeous muscles on all those awesome marines. And who can blame me, huh? ^^

What I found:

Not at all what I expected (I find that the blurbs on those books don't really fit their content), but still tons of awesome, because Choice now had everything that Promise was missing in my eyes. Better flow, better wording, stronger on the characters.

Like before, I very much loved Layna's spunk. She could really make me laugh, because it's just so cute when she tries to threaten steel-to-the-core marines. A lot of the abstrusity in the dialogue made me laugh (there are some quotes at the bottom), but it made me wonder why Layna couldn't handle all of the crap this way, instead of turning to drinking again. She's all irrational female this time around, and while it makes for some laughs and even had me feel for her at points, I had to bang my head against the wall when she was so dumb to dodge her security (at 50% in) because she couldn't handle sitting on her ass for once, trusting that the war trained, gun handling guys could deal with the trouble. WTF? Sure, it makes for action in the plot, but it ruined me liking her as a character again. I liked her better, much better, but this one dumbass move... I wanted to crawl into the pages and rip her head off. Survival instinct, my ass!

But the boys... hrrrrr yummy! Blaze showed some new shades trying out new things to find common ground with Layna. I believe Talon helped some -- and then had to take crap for it, the lovely soul -- but I think Blaze came up with most of the details himself. It was perfectly adorable, plus a lot of sexy, and even funny occasionally. LOVE him. Roak had an appearance, which made me interested in his story. Talon totally broke my heart as more of his background was revealed, and I just couldn't believe Blaze would be such an ass. I'd totally hold a grudge, and I'm not so sure if Talon really has forgiven that outburst, or just buried it under his mask with most of the rest about his wife. I definitvely want to read him falling in love again, too! And where was my favorite stormy Viking, eh? MIA, that's what (and no, even that one important moment he was present doesn't make up for him not being there the rest of the crisis!). Loved all the new additions of the security firm, but don't you dare think I'd take quantity over quality. Uh-uh!

There was already some more hints to possible further couples, and that I absolutely LOVE. Having one pair the focus is great and makes sense, but threading all books kinda together makes it even better. =)

Just barely, the corner of his mouth ticked. Fury raged in my veins. “If you fucking smile at me right now, I’ll break the other half of your jaw!”

“Don’t use that voice.”
“What voice?” he asked, using the voice.
“All sex and marine muscle. It won’t work. I know I look like shit.”

“There’s DNA all over the driveway.”
“You okay?”
I looked down at the blood then at my bare feet. “I’m painting my toenails tomorrow. I hate red.”
“Pink’s good,” Buck said with an air of practicality.
My head popped up. I frowned. “You like pink?”
“I love pink.”

About Sybil Bartel

I grew up in Northern California with my head in a book and my feet in the sand. I dreamt of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books drew me into the world of storytelling. I love the New Adult genre, but any story about a love so desperately wrong and impossibly beautiful makes me swoon.

I now live in Southern Florida and while I don’t get to read as much as I like, I still bury my toes in the sand. If I’m not writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in my backyard, you can find me spending time with my handsomely tattooed husband, my brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer…

But seriously? Here are ten things you probably really want to know about me:

I grew up a faculty brat. I can swear like a sailor. I love men in uniform. I hate being told what to do. I can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaks me out. My favorite word is desperate…or dirty, or both—I can’t decide. I have a thing for muscle cars. But never reply on me for driving directions, ever. And I have a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell my husband.
